Help getting file exported as IDML from a newer version of InDeisgn

Hi 'm getting a shared content plugin error which I understand is because the InDeisgn files I'm trying to open were created in a more recent version of InDesign. I'm using CS5. Can anyone point me in the right direction for exporting them as IDML so I can open them please?

Thanks for any help

Hi @louisecarnold ,

ask the one who created the documents to package the InDesign document so that you can access the IDML files that is done with that process. And also the placed and linked graphics and images.

But to open an IDML file with a previous version of InDesign that was released more than 10 years ago is always a risk. Missing features in the older version is one. Perhaps also missing fonts that were activated with the Creative Cloud Adobe Fonts service. So you also need an exported PDF from the original document to compare the pages from how InDesign CS5 will see them to the intended contents and layout.

If you want to post the file here, someone will open it and save it back, as @Laubender points out, you could be in a for mess.

Thanks that's really helpful. I have no idea who created the files originally they were created a good few years ago. I've not worked for a while following a long term illness diagnosis and now I'm picking up some work an old customer has asked me to update the files. I'll most likely need to get on CC for InDesign as well at some point soon, I'm currently on CC for Photoshop and have InDesign CS5.
