Help with Table of Contents

That sounds like InDesign is carrying in character styles from the source document (or you are mapping to a paragraph style in the TOC dialog box that is too big). 

Start by reading this discussion from this morning (the second half of the question). Are there character styles on your heads? If so, remove them and update the TOC. If not, please share a screen shot of the Table of Contents dialog box showing the style mapping for that particular head.
