How can I get the table of Contents to include embedded data?

I am making five booklets and the first 8 pages are the same for each booklet so I have made a separate Indesign file (with the same paragraph, character and object styles and colours) and embedded these as linked pages into the five booklets, this way I can make changes to just one file.

I've come to the point I want to make a contents page and it's not picking up anything from the embedded pages. Is there a way to do this so it will pick those elements up as well? I know there are going to be many, (many, many) more revisions to do on this and I don't want to update five files, so a solution would be amazing!

Are you using the Book feature to organize separate INDD docs as one? Like chapters in a book?

No, I will look into this, I'm guessing this will solve the above problem?
