What you're seeing is alternates for a selected character or glyph contained within the font. In your screenshot, for example, you're seeing alternate As available in that font you're using. If you'd like to turn off the alternates popup, follow these steps:
- Open InDesign's Preferences from the InDesign menu on Mac or the bottom of the Edit menu on Windows.
- Go to the Advanced Type pane.
- Disable the checkbox control beside Show for Character Alternates, Frations, Ordinals and Ligatures.
- Also disable the option to Show Adornment on Text Selection/Text Frame for more Type controls (this will hide the last vestige of the popup).
- Click OK.
- Restart InDesign to commit the change to preferences file saved on your computer.
