How do I create a fancy formatted email with images?

I'm new to the subject of creating a formatted, classy email that has all the elements of a published document, but I've seen it done. I just don't know where to start. My guess is that Microsoft Word is capable of doing this, but I'm a Mac person through and through and would rather use Adobe apps... Where should I start and how do I learn the fine points of making fancy emails?

TIA,  Ken

I'll tell you where you don't start: with InDesign.

You are wasting your time trying to do this outside of Constant Contact or MailChimp.

Those are the right tools for this job.

they can't be done from indesign because the HTML produced will not work fo email newsletters. no matter how much time you spend on it. Its not the correct tool, the HTML code that will be exported is different. for html newsletters you are better of using mailchimp or another product like it.

I guess my last thought,  as I don't really know, is would it be possible to generate a nice email page from Dreamweaver that could be used as an email?

As I mentioned earlier, it certainly is possible (and it's an excellent tool for this purpose),  to create HTML email newsletters with Dreamweaver, but the learning curve is huge!

And THIS is why I had no idea where to start... I had no idea. Now I can learn and am off in the right direction for learning. Thanks to everyone here who responded so quickly and with the right answer.

If you mean an HTML email newsletter, these are quite complex to produce, so unless you're prepared to put a lot of effort into learning how to produce them, you'll probably be better using something like Mailchimp.
