I'm creating a file with InDesign that will use animaition features of InDesign.
Besides the "publish online" feature that is hosted on a Adobe server, is there a way to share a file? Can I, for example, export to PDF and still retain the animation?

Aside from the commercial in5 option, a free FXL html export script exists that will export all your pages as html files. These can be hosted on a web server. But some small things have to be added for a nice looking presentation, and the links between pages will have to be fixed (possibly).

The epub reader situation on Windows and Linux has improved with the advent of Thorium Reader. InDesign epubs with animation render correctly in it. You will have to tell your WIndows users to view the book with that particular reader, though, and they will have to install it.
