How does Box Drive respond to the opening of InDesign files

Can someone advise whether, when opening and editing .indd (InDesign files) via Box Drive, whether Box Drive recognises also the linked images and spreadsheets, and therefore opens these supplementary files in memory, causing Box Drive to identify them as being downloaded?

Many thanks for clarifying this for me.

This would suggest that where an .indd file has links to images or spreadsheets in them, that since content must be 'available offline' / stored locally on the machine, that it would expected for Box to record each/all the files linked to the .indd to be recorded as downloaded.

Thank you again

Mike

Exactly, otherwise, even if InDesign's request to access the asset would trigger Box's download - InDesign won't have the slightest idea that it needs to wait for this asset to be downloaded - and either mark it as unavailable - or even crash.

BTW, I have used Box successfully. And again, make available offline! Even though it makes duplications of files, I prefer to have all links in a subfolder to the project file folder, no matter whether I'm on local drive or cloud drive.

I'm not exactly sure if that's what you need, but there's also Silicon Connector that should allow you to link images directly to Box locations:

For any cloud service, you should have all assets in the folder/subfolder where the INDD file is located. Additionally, make sure any "files on demand" or "cloud only" features are TURNED OFF.

Thank you Bob - this is helpful.
Why is it necessary for assets to be in same folder as the .indd file ?   is this for performance reasons?   images and files that are regularly linked to various indd files would then need to be duplicated for each relevant .indd - isn't that duplication unwanted?

Do you know if Adobe InDesign has to effectively open also the linked images and spreadsheets when launching the .indd file?

@Mike248

You've misinterpreted @BobLevine's post - linked assets doesn't have to be in the same folder as INDD file - it's just they need to be synchronised and available with INDD file - so you need to turn off "save space" / "on demand option" - all files need to be "available off-line".

You can of course have them in separate subfolders - but if they are in the Box - they need to be "available off-line" - stored locally on your machine.

Thanks Robert - I was aware of function for making content available offline.

I am looking for conclusive advice as to whether accessing/editing Adobe InDesign files from Box Drive opens or downloads relevant images or other files that are linked in the .indd file
