How to access Control bar panel in InDesign

I just updated indesign and the top horizontal toolbar is missing. I tried everything but it doesn't work. I find it very useful to see everything as it was before.

Hello @Astonished_joy5409,

I'm sorry to hear the suggestions did not help. Could you confirm the exact version of the OS/InDesign installed and share a small screen recording of your exact workflow and the problem, so we can better assist you?

Looking forward to hearing from you.

Thank you for your response. I was in the advance mode and it wouldnt show
up but when i changed to Essentials, it appeared.

I know this is an old thread, but a persistent issue. On a Mac, the Control bar may vanish yet remain checked in the Window dropdown menu. Here's my workaround:

Assign yourself a Workspace (also via Window dropdown menu) THEN create another workspace. I find that switching between workspaces will restore the Control bar without needing to quit out of Indd.

Adobe is proffesional software and after every update they reset your preferences! Also set your Workspace to Essentional. Like you dont know what you want. The message saying that preferences was set in previous version of Indesign (or Photoshop or Illustrator) is just a bad joke!

Hi @beatao89346153,

We are sorry for the frustration. We would suggest you check the below settings in your preferences to prevent it from resetting with every future update.

Please let us know if that helps.

Thanks,

Go to Window tab, then click on "Control"

Hi @michaelm36046691 ,

the main issue with the Control panel and all other main menus is perhaps that they are not visible and available with a new installed version of InDesign. Instead the "Home" screen is showing that provides, hm, let's call it advertisement. To change that you could change the default preferences.

The first thing after installing or updating InDesign should be this:

Preferences > General >

[ x ] Show Home Screen When No Documents Are Open

Disable this option.

Then you can easily switch your workspace from [Essential] that is NOT showing the Control panel to something else.

For the "why" you have to ask the developers.

It was their decision. Or maybe the marketing guys won? Don't know…

Hi Bob,

from an UX standpoint I do think that it is NOT reasonable to not show the Control panel with every default workspace.

FWIW: Workspaces [Essentials] and [Review] are missing the Control panel.

I'm struggling to find extra tool bar at top InDesign. I'm using Windows and can't find the toolbar section at the very top that gives buttons to adjust "show hidden characters, etc... Anyone know if this is because that top bar only is available on mac?
