How to Add "Continued on Page" References in InDesign Text Frames

I have a series of text boxes which are threaded. I would like to be able to include (automatically) an indicator that this item continues on page X or on items that are continued that this item was continued from page Y - like they do in newspapers or other publications,

How can this be done?

A very old Script basically written for a client 7 years ago. it would surely need to be updated for the op use [not for free]. It works fine on ID 2025 [not tested with ID 2026]. No cross-ref. used.

Just place the cursor inside the target-story …

“Continued on page X”
Use a cross-reference that targets a paragraph style at the start of the continued text. Format the cross-reference to display the page number. It updates automatically if pagination changes.

“Continued from page Y”
At the top of the next frame, insert a cross-reference pointing back to the previous section’s heading (again using paragraph styles). Avoid typing page numbers manually.

For high-volume editorial workflows (like newspapers), a small script is the most scalable solution. For books or structured layouts, styled cross-references are stable and production-safe.

The key is to rely on dynamic references — not static text — so reflow doesn’t break your layout.

How do you tell it to automatically put the page number of where it is continued to or from?

You can read about how to use these markers here: https://helpx.adobe.com/indesign/using/numbering-pages-chapters-sections.html#add_automatic_page_numbers_for_story_jumps

But “automatic” is misleading—you still need to draw the frames and add the static text. The next page/previous page number markers will track where the story jumps from and to, and will update if you repaginate once you add them.

To fully automate the process, you will need a script.
