How to Automatically Add Sequential Tip Numbers in InDesign for Your Book

Newbie creating a book with InDesign, thanks for your help and patience.

The book offers 365 tips, one for each day of the year, broken down into 12 chapters. How can I get InDesign to automatically add the right tip number to the page using running headers of something? I've added page numbers, but the tip number is different as there wont be a tip number for a page that has a chapter title on it.

The book is set up with two parent pages, one double spread which has a tip on each page, and the other single spread with the chapter title.

Thanks in advance

The short and non-video process is:

  • Create a text frame on the Parent page/s where you want the Tip Number to appear.
  • On the first such page in the document, Place a simple text document or cut and past text content that contains either:
    • A list, one number per line, from 1–365
    • A list of 365 or more Hairline Spaces, each on its own line.
    • The result will be one number or space per frame, on each sequential page with this text frame.
  • Apply a Paragraph Format to this whole text flow that:
    • Creates the number style you want for the Tip Number.
    • And, if you uses spaces, applies an autonumber beginning with 1.

The former (numbers in a list) is absolute and can be quickly created in Excel or the like, but can be messed up by editing or page rearrangement.

The latter (autonumbering) is simple and will always remain in sequence, but can't easily be edited to any other sequence, if needed.

Thanks, James.

Not sure what I'm doing wrong, but can't get either ways to continue on. It
works on the first 2 pages, where I linked the text boxes together on the
parent so the text flows, but doesn't carry it on when I add that parent
page again - it just appears with two blank boxes!

Yoicks. I am having a terrible brain blank on this and can't remember how to make this work.

Can someone with a fully functioning cortex and ID knowledge help the OP (and me) out on this?
