Is there a way to get a lot of text into sepertate text boxes?

Still, why would you with Data Merge...? I feel a deep misunderstanding of InDesign in the question to be honest...

I have a whole list of text in a text box (each on another line) and I want each line of text in a separate text box.

Then, in the ParaStyle definition Keep Options / Start Paragraph:

Enter in the number block makes a frame brake. 
Return in the main block creates a new paragraph.
