How to autonumber pages 1-the last page for a book with multiple files?

Question

Try as I might, I can't figure out how to get auto-page numbering to work for my book which is composed of multiple files. I want it to start from 1 and go to the last page. It resets to 1 at each file unless I manually enter the starting page number in each file under the Layout menu - which defeats the entire concept of auto-page numbering.

Exactly, precisely, what settings do I have to set, to what values, and where are they?

ps All the tutorials I can find online are only dealing with a single file. 😞

You need to search for help using the "Book" feature. There is a whole subset (superset) of document management settings in the Book pane and menu that override the individual component chapter file settings. It can get quite convoluted, so chase down those tutorials for a complete understanding.

But to get a Book to number sequentially, open the Book pane (which should be the first thing you open, and open any and all chapter files from it). Under the 3-line/Hamburger menu at upper right, Book Page Numbering Options — there you go. Use "Update Numbering" to force the Book to renumber all the component pages. Further questions welcome.
