How to Ensure Paragraph Style Export Tags Appear in PDF from InDesign

I'm exporting InDesign files to PDF and creating paragraph styles with export tags to create an accessible PDF. Every time I try and do this from the original document I created, the tags never show up in the PDF. I have to create a new InDesign document and copy and paste everything to that document for the export tags to show up.

Why would this be happening, and how I prevent it?

Maybe experiment with taking the INDD document; export to IDML; open the IDML; save-as to a fresh INDD document. This might set you free from some sort of file corruption. Then, see if the PDF tags are exporting successfully to PDF. Of course, I'm assuming you are clicking on the right things in the PDF Export dialog box? Maybe you can tell us what you are clicking on to convey the settings to these forum folks?

Thanks for the suggestion. I did try that, but unfortunately it didn't work. I also tried to just select everything, copying it into a new InDesign file and then export it that way, and the tags still didn't show up. They only showed up if I select things layer by layer and then import those layers separtely into the new InDesign document. Then when I export the PDF, the tags show up.

Here's a screen shot of what I click on in the PDF export diaglog box, but I didn't change any of the setting when the tags did show up after copy and pasting each layer into a new document, so I don't think it has to do with the export dialog box.

Are you exporting a tagged PDF in your PDF export settings?

BTW, this is an excellent book for InDesign accessibility:
