How to import XML in InDesign document with translation?

I tagged an InDesign document, exported it as XML, and sent it to my vendor for translation. When I imported the XML document, received from the vendor, into my InDesign document, it did not show any translation work.

I noticed that my original InDesign document was missing the tags I had created. This may have happened when I first exported as XML, then imported the XML to check if it was working, and mistakenly hit save.

How can I get to read the translation in my document?

For translation workflows is often IDML used. As far as I know exists a specific program or plug in for that. IDML are zipped xml files with a changed extension.

Thanks, Willi, for your response, though I am not sure if your solution would help me. InDesign documents that I tagged while converting them into XML work well and have been translated.  However, there is one document that I mentioned was initially tagged, converted into XML, and sent to the translator. Importing the translated XML into the original InDesign document fails to translate. I even re-created the InDesign document with proper tags as previously and tried importing the XML, but that did not result in translation either. Wondering whether there is a way around the limitation I described?
