Question

how to insert an object between paragraphs

Several paragraphs in the book I'm laying out will have a graphic placed between them. It will always be the same decorative graphic – I've made it into an object style, but don't see how to "insert it".  (I also may not have styled the object correctly... I want to place it with an established top and bottom margin.)

Example of how it should look is attached. This should be pretty easy?– hoping you can help me out!

Assuming that you want to place this graphic before a specified paragragraph, it is very easy. Follow these steps (I had already answered the same kind of question a few months [years] ago, but I don't find the post anymore).

  1.  Start to place your graphic once as an inline graphic, as you want it to appear, adjust the position. You can set it as an object style if you want to modify it later.
  2.  Cut it using the black arrow, switch to the text tool and run this find-change query

This query allows you to search for the first character of any paragraph where you have applied a specific paragraph style (^.) and replace it by the clipboard content (~c) followed by a paragraph return (~b) and what has been found ($0)

Thank you all. I can't remember feeling so dumb.

I keep trying "insert anchored object" – got as far as creating a box that will hold a graphic, in the correct position, and so it will stay in place when text is changed - the last item, staying in place, being key. (See attachment for my settings.) I then place the graphic (from my files) into the box. I am NOT getting top and bottom margins however, so am manually making space between paragraphs for the graphic.

At this rate I'll have to repeat the process each time the graphic will appear? (It doesn't appear regulalry, so maybe this is just the way it will be.). I thought there would be a way to automate this repeat action (when needed) WITH the graphic inside the box. What am I missing???

I also tried the GREP method and got nothing. I feel like this could be a solution but am clearly doing something wrong there as well.

PS: I tried downloading the IndyFontbut it doesn't seem compatible with Mac (?)

It should be. What happened when you installed the script and tried to run it?

Is that symbol available as a font? I'm guessing it is and I would simply use it on its own as a paragraph style.

No, it's a graphic, otherwise, yes I would use Paragraph styling. I'd love to find this symbol in font format, but since I haven't been able to, it's a vector symbol.

You might be able to convert it to a font. I don't have a link handy but do a bit of googling.

If you can't, then do it as an inline graphic and apply the paragraph style to it that way.
