How to insert increasing number in indesign?

I have a file with over 300 pages, and I want to assign a unique serial number to each page. While I've been using the 'current page number' for this purpose, I now need both the page number and a separate increasing serial number. Is there an alternative method to achieve this, aside from using the 'Insert page number' feature?

Use a list:

Create a text frame on the parent page, on a dedicated layer
Create a paragraph style using a numbered list (see screensshot)
Apply this paragraph style to the frame and type a space to trigger the numbering
Go back to the page panel and select all the pages
Lock all the other layers
In the page panel, go in the option menu and choose “Override all parents pages elements”. I am not sure of the English exact term since I use a French version.

a couple of crazy ideas:

check if variables could help Create and edit text variables in InDesign (adobe.com)
I would consider creating a csv (from Excel probably) with 1 column of increasing numbers and use the Data Merge tools. Merge data to create form letters, envelopes, or mailing labels in Adobe InDesign

Also, if you export to pdf, you can add additional numbering in Acrobat.
