I know if you click an object with the text tool it becomes a custom text frame. But what if you do it on accident. Is there any way to go back?

If it just happened, you can undo.

If it happened a while before and you can't undo, select the text frame and choose Object > Content > Unassigned or Object > Content > Graphic, depending on what kind of object it was.

To keep it from happening in the future, in Preferences > Type > uncheck Type Tool Converts Frames to Text Frames.
