Question

How to manage heading spacing among aligned baselines?

I have headings and subheadings mixed in with body text, and I'm aligning the baselines to the grid. The body text aligns properly, but the spacing for some of the subheadings relative to the body text is sometimes amiss creating too much gap between it and the body text (compare Poster 13 versus Poster 14). The leading for the headings and subheadings are fractions of the baseline leading (13.2 points). I am wondering if there is something I can do automatically to adjust the leading of the heading/subheadings to avoid these occasional gaps. The other alternative is to wait until the text is finalized and then manually attempt to forcefully reduce the gap for each individual heading/subheading, but I'm not even sure that would work.

Here's a screenshot showing the baseline grid (13.2 points) and the font/leading/spacing of each paragraph style:

You don’t say what your baseline grid distance is, but I’ll assume that it’s 13.2 to match your body type. Because the line that reads “Poster 13” is sitting in a grid line and has a leading of 14.86, there isn’t room for the following body type to attach to the next available grid line, so it attaches to the next available line instead.

Of course, I know why it's doing that. The question is there any workaround? There have to be cases where users mix headline/subheadlines in body type and have dealt with this situation before, no?

It looks like you have three paragraph styles in your example. Are all three set to lock to the baseline?

There are five paragraph styles. 1) The blue heading, 2) the author's name, 3) the co-author's names, and 4) the poster paragraph and 5) the body text. Only this last paragraph is set to align to baseline. If I apply it to any of the others, even for just the first line, the spacing for it goes crazy!

Can you post another screen shot with the baseline grid showing? Also, what is the leading of your body text, and what is the spacing of your baseline grid?
