How to save a pdf from ID to upload to Amazon KDP without get the LaTeX/pdfTeX error?

I’m saving 175 inside pages in InDesign of a novel to be uplaoded to Amazon KDP, as a HD pdf using the default ID settings. After multiple errors uploading, they said the issue was that hey don’t support a LaTeX/pdfTeX formatted pdf. I’ve never heard of that, but would like to know if I can adjusst that in the settings before saving the pdf. They said they prefer PDF/X-1a formatted pdf.

If it’s helpful, here are the export settings I’ve used successfully for dozens of KDP books. Set these up and save the preset with your own unique title. Others may have different settings they like to use. Note: This export profile is for standard trade book (grayscale) interior pages, not 4-color books or covers.

Thank you for reaching out, and I apologize for the delay in getting back to you. I'm sorry to hear you're running into this issue, and I appreciate you providing the details.

Could you please try exporting your document as Adobe PDF (Print) and select the PDF/X-1a:2001 preset from the Adobe PDF Preset dropdown, or another available PDF/X preset if PDF/X-1a:2001 isn't listed, and then check if the upload is accepted by Amazon KDP?

If you still receive the same LaTeX/pdfTeX error after exporting the PDF, please let us know the version of InDesign and the operating system you're using. It would also be helpful if you could share a screenshot of the error message along with the Export Adobe PDF dialog showing the export settings. Additionally, please confirm whether this happens with all PDF exports or only with this particular document.

I did try these settings twice and got the same results. The one that was accepted was opening up the .idml file from the 2026 ID collect into the ID 2025 version, and saving the pdf as PDF/X-1a:2001. For some reason, creating the PDF while in the ID 2026 program was creating a conflict with their system. Something maybe Adobe should look into.
