Question

How to set straight single quote (apostrophe) as default rather than curly quote (apostrophe)

I'd like to type straight single quote (vertical apostrophe) rather than a curly apostrophe by default. Aside from unchecking the optinon under preferences > Type > Type Quotes > Use Typographer's Quotes or typing typing with alt + ' for windows or command + ' for mac. Are there other ways that would trigger my single quote to show vertically rather than curly?

Thanks!

Assuming you want to keep typographic quotes on by default, you can use the following keyboard commands:

Windows Double: Alt-Shift-<quote key>

Windows Single: Alt-<quote key>

Mac Double: Cntl-Shift-<quote key>

Mac Single: Cntl-<quote key>

(I'm not on my Mac at the moment, so I can't test the key. This is from memory...)

As Willi has suggested it is possible to turn off Typographers Quotes. To do so go into the Type section of your InDesign Settings/Preferences as shown in the below screenshot:

I'd like to add the fact that only all paragrahs have curly quote but only one section comes out as straight quote. Wondering if it has anything to do with paragraph/character styles...any thoughts?

Turn off typographic quotes. Use the key combination to write curly quotes as if they were letters. It is always possible.
