How to Temporarily Invoke Smart Lines in InDesign on Windows

From what I remember from working on Mac for many years, in InDesign there was an option to call up smart lines with the ctrl key only for a moment, you didn't have to have them on permanently. Now we've moved to Windows and it doesn't work here. Is there a way to turn it on, or is it simply not available in the Windows version of ID? If not, maybe it's worth giving the user such an option somewhere in the options.

Well @miros?aw_7467, you are absolutely correct. I work primarily on macOS Sonoma, and with smart guides disabled, they will temporarily reappear when I hold the Ctrl key. I also have InDesign running on Win 11, and no key combination produced the same behavior. I keep smart guides on and had no idea they could be temporarily enabled/disabled by holding the Ctrl key.

I googled it and came up with this: https://creativepro.com/smarter-guides/. The final paragraph says:

6. You can temporarily turn off all Smart Guides (along with Snap to Guides and Snap to Document Grid) on the Mac by holding the Ctrl key after you start dragging an object.

My revised take: this is a Mac only feature. You can put in a feature request to have it added to Windows here: https://indesign.uservoice.com.

you just had to hold CTRL and move the image or text frame at the same time to use smart lines, or release CTRL to move them freely

I'm thinking you mean Shift, which works on both platforms today, the way it has for years. The Shift key constrains frame movement to horizontal, vertical or to a 45˙ angle. When you release the Shift key, you can move the frame freely, in any direction.

No, we all know that but that's not it. Maybe Adobe has abandoned this function on both platforms. But it worked similarly to shift to limit movement. Holding CTRL only turned on smart lines for the duration of the hold. Unless it was the CMD or ALT key because I don't remember. But someone who is currently working on a MAC can check it, turn off smart lines, and now move an object (a photo or a text frame), hold CTRL and see if smart lines turn on for the duration of the hold. If not, hold down the right CTRL or left, or CMD. Well, I used it for years when we had MAC and now I miss it in Windows.

Of course ALT not, because it is a copy in WIn too. CTRL + U turns on or off intelligent lines. And I mean temporary turning on, holding like Shift. Only for the time held.

@miros?aw_7467

I've moved your post from Creative Cloud desktop to the InDesign forum for you.

On a Mac, Ctrl+Click is the same as right-clicking. Can you try right-clicking in Windows? I can't test, as I am on macOS.

Unfortunately it doesn't work like that. In MAC it was a very good solution, you just had to hold CTRL and move the image or text frame at the same time to use smart lines, or release CTRL to move them freely, this gives you more freedom in designing and working on the layout. I don't understand why it's not in Windows. Sorry for such a late reply, I forgot about this post 🙂
