How to turn off text box gutters by default

Sorry, I'm sure this is answered somewhere, but I haven't been able to find it.

Everytime I lay down a new text box, it has multiple columns. I just want one text box, no columns, no gutters, just a text box. I can't find where to make this the default behavior for when I lay down a new text box. Please point me in the right direction. Thank you!

The same way you change almost every default in InDesign: by making the change with no object selected. For example, if you set the stroke color to red while no object in the document is selected, every new object after that will have a red stroke. You have to set "no stroke" while nothing is selected to change the setting.

In your case, open the text frame menu by pressing Ctrl-B while nothing is selected. Set the number of columns to 1. Save. Voilá!
