Question

Huge file size on exported PNGs in Indesign 15.0.1 / bug?

I have come across a very weird bug today in Indesign: Exporting PNGs seems to write MUCH too large files.

I have exported sets of Full HD images with 72dpi, which resulted in Indesign writing 10-20mb large files.

They contain no layers, the resolution und dpi are correct in the resulting files, but they are around 10x too large by file size. Opening them in PS & re-saving them straight up without modification solves the issue, resulting files are 1-2mb again.

This happens with multiple different Indesign Files and I can't see how this could be related to the source/assets.

Hi there,

Sorry to hear about the trouble you are facing with InDesign. I would request if you can share a few more details like:

  1. The version of the Operating System.
  2. Could you please try resetting the preferences for InDesign by following the steps shared below and let us know if it makes a difference:

For Windows

  • Close all Adobe applications.
  • Go to Locations :
  • C:\Users\user\AppData\Roaming\Adobe
  • C:\Users\user\AppData\Local\Adobe.
  •  Rename InDesign folders to InDesign.old
  • Launch InDesign from CC.

For MAC

  • Close all Adobe applications
  • Go to Locations:
  • ~/Library/Caches
  • ~/Library/Preferences
  • Rename Adobe InDesign and com.adobe.indesign to Adobe InDesign.old and com.adobe.indesign.old
  • Launch InDesign from the CC

Disclaimer: Please note that resetting preferences will remove all the custom settings and InDesign will launch with default settings. This way all your old settings will be saved in .old folders and InDesign will recreate new folders with default settings.

Regards

Rishabh
