Hunspell is NOT WORKING well on InDesign 2024 on macOS Ventura

I am reaching out to request assistance with a persistent issue I am experiencing with hyphenation in InDesign, particularly when working with both Cyrillic and Latin scripts in the Serbian language. Despite ensuring that dictionaries are correctly installed and configured, the hyphenation function fails to operate as expected. This issue is not limited to Serbian; I have also encountered problems with English hyphenation. However, when I adjust the settings to use the Proximity method, English hyphenation resumes normal function, an adjustment that, regrettably, does not resolve the issue for Serbian.

This problem is not unique to my experience, suggesting a broader issue that affects multiple InDesign users on MacOS. The lack of functional hyphenation severely impacts the professionalism and efficiency of our work, creating significant annoying inconvenience.

I kindly request your guidance or a solution to address this malfunction. Any suggestions, updates, or workarounds that could alleviate this problem would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you for your attention to this matter and posibble resolution that will improve the user experience for InDesign designers working with Serbian and English languages on MacOS.

Just in case Adobe doesn't know that, I would redo it using sr_RS as a test. <wild guess>

Thank you Mike,

However, given that the identical language file functions correctly on InDesign for my WinPC, I am puzzled and concerned about why it does not operate similarly on a Mac running Ventura. ENIGMA it is.

I followed these directions:

https://helpx.adobe.com/indesign/kb/add_cs_dictionaries.html

and I'm guessing you found the correct language and country code?

Is it sr_RS ?

Thanks Mike,

Exactly the same method I have used to run the language.
Since serbian is using both cyrillic and latin, it is: sr_Cyrl and sr_Latn.

Good to know you are using Paragraph Styles.

I recently experimented with installing a custom language (outside of the 54 built-in to InDesign). I went through all the steps to make a custom language. I looked up the code names and got that right. Then I tried it out and it didnt work. Then I restarted InDesign, and it didnt work. Then I restarted again and it began to work.

That is not much of an in-depth experience, and I do not know why it did and didnt work, but it eventually began to operate correctly.

Thank you, Mike, for sharing your experience regarding the addition of an additional language.

I can confirm that the info.plist file is functioning correctly, as it operates without issues on a PC. However, it remains a true ENIGMA why the Mac platform does not support this.

It was an amateur decision on my side for removing my older inDesign versions when I updated the program itself.
In older version (2015- 2018) hunspell use to work normal and well..

I hope we shall find a solution..

I was wondering why are you not setting the Serbian language in a Paragraph Style? That is the whole point of using InDesign.

Thank you Mike for your time.

In the example provided, the Serbian language is selected in the Character tab, as illustrated in the screenshots attached.

For example, while working on a book, I ensure to apply Paragraph styles that are set to the Serbian language of course. However, the primary concern is not with the language settings themselves;  it is with the hyphenation feature, which does not function on Mac OS and that is a quite of a problem.
Interestingly, the hyphenation works normally on a PC, while using the exactly same edition of InDesign.

Is Ventura fully updated to 13.6? Is InDesign fully patched to 19.2 (which is currently rolling out globally)?

Hello Bob,

Thank you for jumping in.
Ventura is fully updated,
same as InDesign with latest update 19.1. - it says I am up to date.
CC doesn't shows an option 19.2 to me, checked a minute ago.
