Question

I am receiving "There Was an Error Updating the Artifact" whenever I update a link

Mac OS 14.7.1 and Windows 11
Adobe Indesign 2026

I have been receiving the error message "adobe there was an error updating the artifact" since last Thursday (11.20.25). I usually get this error after the 10th or 11th time I've updated the document, but now it occurs whenever I try to update a link. In the past, even when I get the error, the link updates. That is not the case now.

I can create a new link with no issue, but once that link is created I can not update it. I have tried this on both my Windows and Apple machines. I've reset my preferences and that didn't fix anything. My internet connection is strong, so that isn't the issue.

I can create a new document and update the link to that, but that doesn't help with the document I am currently editing. I don't know what is wrong with the document I am editing due to the fact that the error gives no explanation. Am I going to have to rebuild a 28 page document, or is there something else I'm not seeing?

Hi @jason_8572,

Thanks for the detailed update. I tested this on my end by creating a new Share for Review link and updating it around ten to fifteen times, and it worked consistently for me without showing the artifact error. To help narrow down what is happening in your case, could you confirm whether this behavior occurs only with this specific document or if you see the same issue in every file you try?

It would also be helpful to know if you've had a chance to test this on a different network. For example, if you temporarily connect through your phone's hotspot, does the issue still occur the moment you try updating the link? Another thing I'd like to rule out is whether you see the artifact error in the Share for Review panel, but the document actually updates correctly when viewed on the web. If that happens, please note that we do have a bug logged for that exact scenario, and you can take a look at it here: https://adobe.ly/45e9b7l

Also, let me know if signing out of the Creative Cloud Desktop app and signing back in changes anything. If you haven't tried that yet, please give it a shot once and see if the update action works afterward.

Looking forward to your update.

Abhishek

UPDATE: I opened the file in an older version of InDesign and was able to Share for Review and update the link accordingly, which makes me believe that the issue is with the latest build of InDesign.
