Question

I've suddenly lost the ability to type in newly created text boxes.

I've been moving along creating a photo book in InDesign, and now, suddenly, I can no longer type in newly created text boxes. I can create the text box, but the cursor no longer appears when I click into the box. I try and type, but nothing shows up. I've created 60+ pages up to this point doing this exact move, suddenly it has stopped working and I can't figure out why.

Hi @dazapper:

InDesign doesn't prefer "500 pt text"—some sort of default has changed in the file.

My guess, without seeing your document, is that you are not taking full advantage of paragraphs styles yet. This is something to look into when you have some downtime.

I'm also guessing that your text is using [Basic Paragraph] in the Paragraph styles panel or pehaps a paragraph style based on that definition and that definition is what is changing. You can right click it > Edit to modify the definition.

My guesses could be completely off, of course. Screenshots help us help you more quickly, as does sharing your file.

I'm working on a MacBook Pro laptop with no mouse and no "right click" feature. What does one do to get to the "right click" command without a mouse?

Me too. Either a two finger click on the trackpad or Ctrl+click with one finger.

Thanks for the guidance, Olivier! For some reason unknown to me, the text default size reverted to "0," effectively making any type useless. It's working fine now, thank you for the advice. It was only happening in this particular file, it was fine in another book I'm working on.

Olivier--the issue continues. The text box has automatically reverted all my previously entered texts to 500pt and they've all seemingly disappeared from all edits. How do I changed the preference to keep the text size at 12pt? I've looked at the preferences page, but can't find the prompts to make the change permanent. Every previously edited text box has reverted to 500pt, and now I'm manually going back to each page to make corrections. It's quite frustrating, and I have no idea why the program prefers a 500pt text.

@dazapper This can happen if the textbox is too small to display any text in the default font size (this issue is particularly egregious in tables). Try to make your textbox larger, change the font size, and then restore its original size. Alternatively you could change the font size of your default text style.

Is this in one file or all files?
