ID/IC workflow shared server CRASHING

For the InDesign/InCopy preferred workflow to function, you must work on a shared server. Why then does InDesign CRASH whenever I try to work on the ID file on the server vs.  locally? You HAVE TO work on the shared server for the InCopy assignments/stories to update simultaneously to working on ID file. I've tried this on a wired server as well as on Dropbox with the same result. Help!!
