IDML CC to InDesign 2014

I saved my CC indd file as an IDML file yesterday. When I tried to open it at work with their 2014 version of Adobe InDesign it would freeze and I had to restart my computer. It's a 50 page file I put two days of work into and I need to open it. I thought that's what IDML was for. My place of work isn't going to update and generally I would just work from the 2014 version but I need to put it some time over the holiday and I don't have a 2014 version at home. Any thoughts on opening the file with InDesign 2014 and without so much hell would be appreciated? Thank you.

Just to make sure that there isn't something wrong with the file try saving another file from CC to an IDML and try opening it on your work computer with CC 2014. If it opens then it's possible that the problem is with the file.

To answer your question, yes, IDML is indeed InDesign's form of back saving. However, if you've incorporated any of CC 2018's new features into your document then they will be lost when opening with an earlier version. Further, although I have never heard of having a document react in the manner which you are presenting because the IDML contained newer features, I would consider it as a possibility. Bottom line is that back saving documents contains risks.

I suggest you install Cc2014 at home. Multiple versions are supported. You can get your work into Cc2014 somehow then do this project all there. Back saving is for a desperate last resort, not normal planned workflow.

How many cup of coffee/tea or whiskey drinks do you do when waiting?

In my real practice I have been waiting 200 page idml opening with a 4 hour +. Be patient, check in processes that InDesign using some percents of processor and again pour to yourself a little whisky/coffee+cognac+cigar/juice/cake/any else you like.

Remember, never say you can't do something in InDesign, it's always just a question of finding the right workaround to get the job done. © David Blatner

Thank you Bill. I will try another file as well and see what happens.

Does the INDD file open in CC2018? If so, why not install it at work?

That’s what Creative Cloud is for…keeping everyone up to date.

It's a government job. We can't install whatever we want on our computers and I shouldn't be paying for the software used at work. As an Adobe Expert, can you answer my question? I thought this situation is exactly what IDML is for. Shouldn't it work? Thank you.
