Illustrator Artboards Missing Elements When Placed in InDesign

This has been a constant thorn in my side for the last year, it’s definitely an issue with recent updates as I have changed nothing about how I use these tools in the last 16 years.

Every time I need to add some illustrator artboards to indesign to create a concept deck, there will be a few artboards that import in with something missing.

I go back to illustrator to check to make sure there’s no hidden layers, no unusual settings differing between elements. Nothing. It’s completely random in what it decides it will show and what it will hide when imported into illustrator.

This is what is in the illustrator file:

This is what happens when I import the file to indesign as an artboard.

I’ve tried everything I can reasonably do to fix this. Even creating entirely new files to put the artboards into. Deleting them, saving and then putting the text back and saving again so the file updates in InDesign. I’m at my wits end with this.

In addition to what @Abhishek Rao said: If updating to Illustrator 30.3 and resaving files doesn’t solve the issue, make sure to disable Save in Background in Illustrator preferences.

Hi @defaultrjaomfiv0pg5,

Sorry to hear you're running into this, I understand how frustrating it can be when content disappears unexpectedly while placing files.

To help narrow this down, could you please confirm which versions of Illustrator and InDesign you’re currently using? Also, I'd recommend taking a look at this UserVoice thread and checking if the behavior you're seeing matches what's described there:

If it does match, this issue has been addressed in more recent versions of Illustrator (v30.3). One important thing to note is that existing files may still be affected, even after updating. Files created or resaved in the latest version should work as expected.

For your current files, please try opening them in the latest Illustrator version, resaving them, and then placing them again in InDesign to see if the content appears correctly.

Let me know how it goes, and I'll be happy to help further if needed.
