Illustrator Copy-Paste Bug now in InDesign + Instant Freeze on Launch

Congratulations to the development team! You actually managed to do it: The copy-paste bug that has been actively ignored in Illustrator for months has now officially arrived in InDesign. An absolute masterpiece of breaking fundamental operating system functions across the entire suite.

Current state of the software:

  • Copy-Paste Failure: Elements cannot be pasted, or doing so crashes the application instantly.

  • Instant Freeze: Upon launch, InDesign freezes completely after about 2 clicks every second time it is opened (infinite spinning wheel).

  • Preferences Reset: The preferences now literally delete themselves on every single restart.

Please save yourself the generic "delete your preferences" or "reinstall the app" copy-paste answers. This is a deep-seated code issue within your shared components, not a user error.

Just out of curiosity: Which elementary core features are you planning to ruin next and ignore for the foreseeable future?

  • Software: InDesign (Latest 2026 version) / Illustrator V. 30.5.1 64-bit

  • OS: Windows 11 (Version 25H2)

  • Hardware: Intel i7-11700K, 32GB RAM, NVIDIA RTX 3060

I’m writing to check on the status of the issue. Were you able to resolve the problem by following Anubhav’s suggestion and testing InDesign in Safe Mode, or are you still seeing the same behavior?

If the issue is still occurring, could you please also try the troubleshooting steps in this article and let us know the result:

Could you also share your exact InDesign build number, such as 21.4 or 21.3? It would be helpful to know whether the copy-paste crash happens in a brand-new document or only in certain files, whether launching InDesign in Safe Mode changes the behavior, whether you have any third-party clipboard managers, antivirus software, or system enhancement utilities installed, and whether the preferences reset after every launch or only after a crash. Please also manually reset the InDesign preferences by following the video at the bottom of this article and let us know if that helps:

If possible, please share a short screen recording showing the launch freeze, the copy-paste failure, and the preference reset behavior. That will help us investigate further.

Thank you for the link. However, I am unable to select InDesign when creating a bug report because the "Category" dropdown menu does not offer it as an option.

As you can see, InDesign is entirely missing from this official bug report list. Since I could not select it from the subject menu, I applied the "indesign" and "Bugs & Crashes" tags manually so the post remains searchable for other users experiencing the same issue.

I do not have any more time to spend on troubleshooting this forum interface right now, so I will leave the post as it is. Thank you for your understanding.

Not the first time I’ve seen a comment like this posted today! Bug reports for InDesign can be posted at indesign.uservoice.com. Most of the core apps have a Uservoice and a bug report forum here, but InDesign only has the Uservoice.
