Image placeholder on Master/Parent Page InDesign

I am trying to format a book with a full page and half page images throughout.

What I would like to do is to create blank "Image Pages" that I can place into document  and then Drag/Drop images from my computer.

My idea was to create a correctly sized and formatted image frame + a caption frame on a master/parent page with both text wrapped.

Then, at the point where I want an image I drag the master/parent page onto the page full of text. The master page with text wrapping "clears" a space on my document page and then I can drag in an image.

It doesn't seem to work. I can drag in the image OK but it ignores the frame created by the master page. I can't Auto-Fit/Fit Content and the Caption doesn't pick up the placed image either.

I have found some things in this forum that solve similar problems, but not this problem. Is this approach the wrong one. Is there a solution using another method (scripting?) that I am missing

Many thanks

You should first detach the parent item (the frame) from your page and then copy or place your image there via the import dialogue.

Detach a parent item

  • To detach a single parent item from its parent, first override it by pressing Ctrl+Shift (Windows) or Command+Shift (Mac OS) and clicking the item on a document page. Then choose Detach Selection From Parent in the Pages panel menu.
  • To detach all overridden parent items on a spread, override the parent page items you want to detach, and target that spread in the document. (Don’t go to the original parent page.) Choose Detach All Objects From Parent from the Pages panel menu. If the command isn’t available, there aren’t any overridden objects on that spread.
