Question

Image placement automation to optimize document space.

I was wondering if there's a script/plugin that would automate the process of placing images of different sizes and shapes in a document, optimizing the layout to cover all the space possible in each page. Something like what the automatic UV layout does in Maya (you can see an example in the following video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=psGbZF7xKV8 on 1.08min).

It could be also something for photoshop or illustrator.

Whereas you can File > Place as many images as you want, the positioning of them is up to the human user. A hidden trick of multiple Place is to place them in a grid, using the keyboard shortcut technique called gridify. Still, tho, all the images will be in rows and columns of a same size.

Now if all the selected image frames had the Auto-Size switch turned on, you could then move on to the Gap tool to redistribute sizes and positionings and some pix would get larger and some would get smaller as you adjust the gaps.

Read about grid placement about halfway down this helpx page:
