Question

Image Shadows Darkening and Pixelating

I am not sure what to even call this - but we have a file we are printing as a part of a large 25x11" trifold with many images throughout. We're having repeated issues with one image in particular where the shadows appear to be blending into one "blob" of color and having a hard edge to them. (Image smoothing issues maybe?) - We even tried changing the photo, but the new photo has the same issue. Looks fine on a screen and our Canon press prints the photo just fine, but our Konica has this issue when printing. We can't run the job on the Canon due to tray size limitations.

Any ideas what causes this, how to fix it, or even what this issue is called?

This appears as though the DFE (Digital Front End) for your Konica printer is using a UCR setting (Under Color Removal) during the conversion to print data. UCR will reduce the CMY of an image when converted from RGB to CMYK, leaving mostly K. If the UCR curve is abrupt, a posterized image can result.

If UCR is the cause of the issue, you can convert this image to CMYK in Photoshop using a profile that doesn't utilize UCR, like the U.S. Sheetfed Coated profile.
