Images placed with transparent pixels (from Photoshop) show up white

I have the latest versions installed of both PSD and inDesign. I have tried TIFF, PSD and PNG (24) and every time I place the images, the background is white instead of transparent. I'm stuck!

When placing the image make sure that you have Show Options selected.

So it's: File>Place

Then in the dialog box here select show import options.

In the show options when  you place the image select that it should be transparent.

One additional note regarding TIFF files only: When saving in Photoshop, in the TIFF Options dialog, be sure to check "Save Transparency" in the lower left corner. Otherwise, even if you follow all of the above advice, the transparency won't be honored in InDesign.

In addition, make sure the frame doesn't have a white fill.

Just to add to this: The options are sticky, meaning what you select once will stay selected until you access the options again.
