Importing text from Word

Each time I try to import text from Word into InDesign (I'm importing 2 pages worth of text), each paragraph goes onto a new page.

What should appear as 2 pages of text is becoming 16 individual pages with one paragraph at the top of each page.

Can someone please advise if I'm doing something wrong or what's happening?

Check the Keep Options for the paragraph stykle assigned to the text to see if it's set to start in next column or on next page.

Also, turn on hidden characters and be sure the end of paragraph symbol is an ordinary pilcrow (¶) and not some other type of break.
