In Design Read-Only Files

Having an issue where InDesign files can open either as “Read only” files, or turn into “Read Only” files while working within file.

 

Seems to happen when there are multiple InDesign files open. This prevents user from saving work. The user would have to do a “save as” and rename the file for it to save.

 

Because our files are on a shared drive, we’re thinking that the problem could be related to that.

 

Additionally, we’ve unchecked the partially checked read only box in the properties window of the file folders in question, but it seems to be partially checked the day following the change.

 

Also using the latest version of InDesign and just did a windows update.

 

Multiple users on the same network have been exposed to this problem and if you don’t notice  “Read only” in the tab, you could lose completed work.

InDesign is EXTREMELY sensitive to the network speed / lag.

 

You should use your network location for backup purpose or to link assets - you shouldn't work directly on a network location.

Unfortunately working locally makes it extremely likely that two users may be working on the same file simultaneously, so you have to have some method set up to assure that everyone knows when another user is working on a file.

    Hello @elegant_determination1650,

     

    Would you mind confirming if by "latest" you mean InDesign version 20.1? Please also share your Windows OS details.

    Since your files are stored on a shared drive, could you test by saving the file locally and check if the issue persists? If the problem doesn’t occur locally, this is expected behavior when multiple users access the same file at the same time, as InDesign does not allow simultaneous write access to a file.
