Question

Incorrect paragraph numbering in different layers

Good morning,

I have a problem on InDesign with paragraph numbering in the different language layers.

I write instruction manuals and use different language layers.
The sequence of paragraph numbering in the original language (Italian) is correct, but as soon as I turn on the layer of another language (which I duplicated from Italian) the numbering gets messed up.

Below is an example, the paragraph in the IT layer is 2.2 (and it is correct), while the paragraph in the EN layer is 2.3:

Actually, not all files in the book have the same problem, so I tried "using" these correct files to fix the wrong files, but the error returns.

Thank you,

Alberto

    Hi @Alberto Couch:

In my experience, lists will continue to increment even when they are on separate layers, but will restart when one or the other layer is hidden. I can see that you are hiding/showing the En/It layers, so it is expected that they should number independently of each other.

I suspect that the En layer has something inadvertently styled as a heading on a previous page that you haven't noticed. If you can't find it, and are able to share the file, I'm happy to take a quick look. (Put the file on dropbox and message me a link privately.)

Because English and Italian are separate stories, you could also try disabling Continue Numbers Across Stories, if somehow (and I can't see how from just these two screen shots) English is picking up where the Italian is leaving off.

Type > Bullets and Numbered Lists > Define Lists > Edit Lists
