Question

.indd file corrupt and crashes InDesign when opened

I have an assignment that I've been working on for months in InDesign.

I had a Windows update last night and now my .indd file is corrupt.

When I open the file it crashes InDesign, I have sent an email to InDesign support, I got an automatic return email saying the person assigned my ticket is on leave until April 2024 which won't work for me because my assignment is due tomorrow.

I've tried everything at my disposal to try convert the .indd to .idml.

  • BlindOpen javascript - this just crashes the InDesign window
  • Reverting the windows update - no change
  • Reverting the InDesign version - no change
  • Tried on another PC to open the InDesign file - no change
  • Tried opening a copy of my .indd - No change

Just remeber I cannot open the file without InDesign crashing so I cannot save the file to CC or export it as a .idml.

I'm also not paying for a non-adobe product to make the conversion just in case it doesn't work and also its very expensive.

Try to retrieve a backup of your file. If you don't run your own backup then, as far as I understand, Windows has its own backup facility that's always on. I'm not a Windows user but I know it was discussed here.

Indeed - usually if you right click in the folder where the file is and go to Properties - you should see a tab called Previous Versions
