Question

INDD files versus INDDC files versus INDDL files

Hey gang,

Help me get this straight, please, as I experiment with newer things:

An INDD file is operated within the InDesign application on desktop. OK, I know that.

An INDDC file is an InDesign file converted to be stored in the Adobe Cloud. Is that the same as what you put into a Project folder? For sharing?

But what about Share for Text Editing? Is there now a 3rd InDesign filetype? What is an INDDL file? Only for collaboration with the awkwardly-named “InCopy on the web (beta)?

Are there 2 cloud-based versions of the InDesign document?

How does anyone accomplish any version control with this arrangement?

    Hi @Mike Witherell,

Thanks for raising this. I checked in with the product team to get some clarity. In Adobe InDesign, the two file types serve different purposes even though both are tied to cloud workflows. .INDDC files are used for standard cloud documents, including features like Invite to Edit and general cloud-based collaboration and storage. On the other hand, .INDDL files are specifically created as part of the Share for Text Editing workflow, which is tied to InCopy on the web (beta). So, while they may seem similar, they are not interchangeable and are designed for different collaboration scenarios.

One important thing to note is that currently there is no version control mechanism available for .INDDL files. If version control is something you’re looking for in this workflow, I’d be happy to share that feedback with the team. Additionally, I’d encourage you to submit this as a feature request as well. I understand how important this functionality can be and raising it will help the team prioritize it. You can do this via the InDesign UserVoice page.

    Hope this helps clarify things!

No reply from Adobe as yet, here's hoping!

    I’m looking for clarity myself:

    Hi @BenCogent,

Sorry for the delay here, and I understand how confusing this workflow can feel with the newer file types and beta features.

I’ve shared a suggestion on your other thread regarding opening the INDDL file, could you please check that and let me know how it goes so we can proceed accordingly.

Also, if you have any further questions around InCopy on the web (beta), feel free to share them here, I’ll be happy to help.

    Looking forward to your update.
