InDesign 19.4 crashes when using type tool on macOS 14.4.1 version

Hi all,

I am currently running version 19.4 of Indesign CC 2024 on my MacOS 14.4.1 (23E224).

I can use most functions in the software fine but whenever I go to use the typetool the programe crashes.

Has anyone found a workaround for this? I have been sending crash reports to Adobe.

Thanks!

If a document is not behaving well then try

File>Export

Choose IDML

Open the IDML in InDesign
Save the file as a new InDesign file with a new name
See if the issue persists.

-----

Try resetting your preferences:

Windows: Start InDesign, and then press Shift+Ctrl+Alt. Click Yes when asked if you want to delete preference files.
macOS: While pressing Shift+Option+Command+Control, start InDesign. Click Yes when asked if you want to delete preference files.
A dialog will appear asking to delete the InDesign Preferences, select 'Yes' on this dialog.

Reinstalling rarely fixes everything - you can do a complete reinstall using the
Creative Cloud Cleaner Tool https://helpx.adobe.com/creative-cloud/kb/cc-cleaner-tool-installation-problems.html

@Eugene Tyson  has good suggestions.

But there's an easier way to restore your InDesign preferences since youre using 19.4 version:

The keyboard shortcut on launch technique explained in the next section works for all versions, but is difficult for some to accomplish because of the precise timing required. InDesign 19.3  and later introduced a new feature that will allow you to reset preferences from within the program.

  1. Save and close all open files.
  2. Open Edit > Preferences > General (Windows) or InDesign > Preferences > General (Mac.)
  3. Click Reset Preferences on Quit. Close and then restart InDesign.

Yes, I haven't tried that method so that's why I don't recommend it.

The restore preferences is a 'soft' restore - in my opinion and the link I share has more detailed explanation how to dig deep to clear caches and etc.
