Indesign 20.5 Serious error detected

Hello,

For a campaign the company is working for I had created a document in InDesign, after closing it I encountered the next day InDesign closing immediately upon opening with the message that a serious error was detected. Conceding to that the document was corrupted/damaged and making the assumption that it could have been due to me saving the document to a shared folder in my company's Google Drive, I started a manual recovery by recreating the file on my device itself. After recreating it and opening the document again today I ran into the same issue. All other InDesign files I have are completely fine. Anyone have some insights into this problem?

  • I am on InDesign 20.5 (have installed previous versions and the current beta to see if that helped – it did not)
  • I am on MacOS Sequoia 15.6.1 (on a company managed device with local admin rights)

Hi @rrrrrrrroelio,

Thanks for sharing the details. Since this only happens with one specific file and not others, it points to something within that document causing the crash. Do you see the Adobe crash reporter when InDesign closes? If so, please submit the report and share the email address you used via DM, so I can review the logs. Ref: https://adobe.ly/3V58QP0

Could you also check if the same crash happens when opening the file on another machine or under a different user profile? That will help us rule out environment-related issues. It would be useful to know if this file was ever packaged and reopened from the packaged folder, or if it has only lived on Google Drive and your local system. If possible, please share the file with us for testing, and if it's confidential, you can send it over via DM.

Looking forward to your update.

Abhishek

Hi @Abhishek Rao

I did see that window and filed multiple reports. Hope these will be received in good condition, I may have not given a proper description as the file I am working on is under a really tight deadline.

Opening the file on a different machine resulted in equally a notification on a damaged file, but not the dialog window of a serious problem, it left the message of "Error Code 6: Could not complete your request because of a database error. Or a damaged file".

I haven't packaged the file earlier, but since my comment I just finished recreating it. Which I have stored only on my device for now. Happy to share the file through a DM.

Best,

Roel

Hi @rrrrrrrroelio,

Thanks for confirming the details. I checked but could not find any crash reports submitted under your community email address. Could you please try submitting the report again and share the email address you used while submitting, so I can track it? I also wrote to you on DM with this request.

Looking forward to your update.
