InDesign 2019 crashing while placing a word file on Windows system

I have 90 individual Word chapters to format. ID is crashing every time I try to place a file. I've converted the Word files to .rtf and 97-2003 compatible to see if that helps. I'm past a deadline and pulling my hair out. Began after latest update. I cannot get the prompt to delete preferences on opening with the ctrl-alt-shift command. I send a crash report every time. I'm going to see if I can figure out how to go back to the last version.

Hi Carol,

Sorry to hear that InDesign is crashing while placing the word files. That's not a typical experience with InDesign. Let us make this right for you. Would you mind sharing a few more details like:

  • OS (Windows 10/7)
  • Exact version(build) of InDesign
  • Where the files are saved (Network Drive/ System HDD/ Shared Folder on System /External HDD)?
  • Is the issue specific to Word files? Can you place other files like PNG, JPEG or PDF without the crash? If yes, could you please confirm if you are importing any styles or formatting?

  • Could you please share a sample file with us? You can simply upload it to the creative cloud and share the download link.

To reset preferences, please try this method:

  • Go to the following locations :
  • C:\Users\user\AppData\Roaming\Adobe
  • C:\Users\user\AppData\Local\Adobe.
  • Rename InDesign folders to InDesign.old
  • Launch InDesign from CC.

Looking forward to your response!

Regards,

Srishti

I've gotten this far on looking for a way to trash the preferences but I can't find anything that contains preferences.
