InDesign 2021 on Mac Freezing with Spinning Beach Ball

I'm running Mac OS 10.15.7 Catalina. InDesign (16.1) will launch, but as soon as I open a document or try to create a new document, I am greeted with the endless beach ball, and my macbook fans start roaring like a tornado and I have to force-quit.

This is with no other programs running. Anyone else experiencing this?

Forgot to mention, I tried opening of the app so that preferences would be deleted (shift + control + option + command) but it did not help.
