InDesign 2025 SLOW

Just started using ID 2025 this morning and I'm noticing a LOT of lag time with pretty much any activity. I'm running a Mac Studio with an M2 Ultra, so it's not my computer. I've tried some simple troubleshooting but it is simply not responding like ID 2024. Help!

Correct answer Mike Witherell

Here is a thorough compendium of InDesign troubleshooting.

This allows you to try multiple ideas to solve your slow-down problems (which can be caused by many different things).

I'm getting random lagging back again today, so it hasn't been a permanent fix. I'm planning on switching back to 2024 but as working in 2025 has meant converting my documents to the latest update (why is that even a thing?), has anybody had any issues with reverting back?

Same here.... We hoped the new update would fix how unbearable working with 2025 is. So much focus on GEN-AI to "improve" workflows and they messed up the rest (don't get me to talk on the picker tool).

Recent discussions on other issues make me wonder:

While highly unlikely, is it possible that Magnet plays a role here, too? Once again, it's unlikely as the issues are quite different, plus the slowness is only reported for InDesign 2025. And users on this thread don't report the problems that were ultimately determined to have been caused by Magnet.

Still, just in case: is anyone on this thread using Magnet, a window management utility?

SAVE YOURSELF THE STRESS:

As with other bugs that perplex many people, NONE of the suggestions work for this issue. It's the same with the Camera Raw crash issues in PS that happened years ago. THE ONLY OPTION IS TO REVERT TO AN EARLIER VERSION OF THE SOFTWARE. There is no amount of pref rebuilds, turning off features, or system restarts that fix these issues. GO BACK to a version of the software that worked for you; THAT IS THE ONLY 100% solution. All other solutions offered are NOT the solution. This is the ONLY SOLUTION—100%. DON'T WASTE YOUR TIME further and get frustrated and backed up on work due to these solvable issues: GO BACK TO THE VERSION THAT WORKED FOR YOU. SIMPLE. DONE. InDesign Beta 2025 is BORKEN. Adobe has not yet found the bug/solution/workaround.

Good luck,
Ian

You know, Adobe is getting a lot of grief for this abysmally slow ID release, but honestly, I sort of like it. Every time the spinning beach ball appears, it gives me time to sit quietly and reflect on life and all of the joy it has to offer. I can close my eyes and spend a few moments in peaceful meditation while I wait for ID to finish a task, which, granted, should have happened immediately, but is a simple blessing all the same.

Don't worry. Generative AI features will fix everything.

Going back to InDesign 2024 19.5 is the only way to have a clean workflow, even with simple document…

Closing the contextual taskbar solve halfway the problem. Still loosing 1-2 sec each click, each scroll.

Also still experiencing this issue. Updated to 20.0.1, worked fine for about 10 minutes then the beach ball came back with a vengeance. Common Adobe, fix this.

Same. I reverted back and wont try again for a while. I wonder when we can expect a fix!

This new version is horrible! EVERYTHING lags. I am working on a brand new computer.

A new computer doesn't mean anything without the specs.

OS, RAM, Processor, GPU, etc.

Obviously. Latest Mac OS, 32GB Ram, there's not reason this should be happening. Clearly from the thread it's obvious the problem is Adobe.

Add me to the list. Mac Studio M1 Max w/64GB RAM running macOS Sequoia 15.1. ID2025 was fine yesterday but today it's nearly unusable. I tried every suggestion offered in this thread and nothing worked. I finally reinstalled ID2024 and it works fine. I don't get it, I've been using ID2025 since the day it was released with no problem, but today it was like molasses. Very frustrating.

I've had similar issues. Indesign 2025 is very slow to respond and very laggy when clicking from one element to another element. A workaround for me that seems to have worked was to close the 'Contextual Task Bar'. Go to Window, and at the bottom is the 'Contextual Task Bar'. To be honest, the 'Contextual Task Bar' is a terrible feature, more often than not, it's in the way of whatever I'm working on. I'm constantly moving it to see the detail behind it. Just turn it off. I'm running 64gb M1 Max Mac Studio, Sequoia 15.1.

Same problem here! InDesign 2025 is running incredibly slow. Just to give one example, when I try to select text in a text box, it takes – and I timed it – a solid 5 seconds for the action to complete. This delay of about 2–5 seconds happens with nearly every click on a new element. It’s absolutely unusable! I downgraded to the 2024 version, and now everything runs smoothly again. try to close the new "contextual tasks bar" (barre des tâches contextuelles" in FRA)…
