InDesign 2026 Text Disappears While Editing Text Frames on Windows

First, the latest InDesign update installed "2026" on my Win 11 box, but did not remove/update the "Start", or the "Taskbar" shortcut links ...

After sorting out the "Can't open this InDesign file - it was created in a newer version" roadblock, I have been working on simple, no linked art, etc. 8.5x11" documents and running into a BIG problem ...

Creating & saving a single-page document, then creating an additional text frame, adding formatted text, thinking about "what's next" \, etc ...

I will have the "text cursor" involved, tap the intended frame to enter SOMETHING/ANYTHING text-related & the existing content disappears ...

The text frame remains, nothing is flashing, no warning/error box appears - nothing ...

Going to the edit drop-down menu shows "undo clear" (not my initial reaction destination) ...

The "undo clear" desire returns the affected text, but in a previous iteration - the last save has resolved to "somewhere" in the run-up to said "save" ...

The backspacing of text, "enter" for a new paragraph > gone ...

Previous "before back-deletion" characters, no new paragraph break - whatever "accomplished since "SAVE" does not exist ...

Windows has been updated a few times recently (not sure of an update happening between an "OK" InDesign build & this latest workflow re-direct) ...

     I'm just a remote Prepress/Graphic Designer who's getting older & more invisible (boo-hoo) ...

Would be nice if my $59.99/month subscription wasn't also an unscripted walk in the woods ...

Hello everyone

We are still experiencing an issue in  InDesign where text suddenly disappears while we are actively working on a document.

This is happening during normal editing, without any error message or crash. In some cases, the text reappears after zooming, scrolling, or reopening the file, but in others it does not.

We are currently using the latest version of InDesign (21.1).

Has anyone else faced this issue with this version?
Is this a known bug, or is there any recommended workaround or fix?

Any help or support would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you.

  • Trying to use production InDesign after having trialed the prerelease caused me no end of issues. First, it couldn't find any of my preferences. I thought they were trashed, but they were still there in AppData Roaming, they just weren't loading. After a reboot they showed up again. But all my effort to create a perfect jumplist got trashed for real. For this project, I had it set up like shown below, and error message I get when trying to use my lovingly and laboriously created jumplist is below as well. Sigh.

  • However, I must say that this pre-release version opens files much faster. Well, until I tried to open one of them from the jumplist that I laboriously created for the pre-release version, figuring I would give it a try. The jumplist looks normal but nothing happens when I select one of the files from the jumplist. Ah, well, it _is_ a prerelease version so I shouldn't complain about that. I tried editing one of my big files and the pre-release was soooo much faster at editing my files. But it wanted to save the changes in a new format, which I'm not going to do as I'm not sure I'll be able to use the pre-release file format on a regular basis. Looking forward to the new version with the new file format and faster editing. Won't have to use the Copy Editor (Beta) all the time! Update: tried to recreate the jumplists in the "regular" production version of InDesign, and though I can create them, none of them work, giving the same error as in the above picture, presumably because the pre-release version hijacked the jumplist. The jumplist's not needed, it just saves a bit of time every day. That also raises the question: should I use the pre-release version and new file format going forwards? Since it works so much better, I would like to do that, but if I end up with files in a format I can't use because I get dropped from the pre-release program or some other reason, that would be a disaster.

Hello,

I am not seeing any pre-release options for InDesign when I go to my Creative Cloud dashboard. Please advise - my latest update was 21.1

So NO still happens

Under "Pre-release" there is nothing other than illustrator. I have v21. x64  installed.

Frustrating

Also the undo function has stopped working

What is going on?

I have a Widows computer. For the past two months, I've been experiencing major problems with InDesign. For example, when I type text, the entire page disappears. I can then fix this by clicking "Preview." Previously, I could fix an error by scrolling back several times, but now it's suddenly only a single page. What could be wrong? We've tried everything, but I can't figure it out. Teh computer has 16 GB of RAM, an Intel (R) Core i7-14700 (2.10 GHz) processor, and Windows 11 Pro.

These are known issues:

They should be fixed in the current pre-release version (you'll find more info in that thread), which should also be released officially sometime soon (albeit there's no definite date).

my text is still disapearing when i'm making the text box smaller, what do i do??

January 16, 2026

My coworker and I are experiencing an issue when we delete characters and sometimes change indentation. InDesign will delete entire paragraphs or sections. You have to "EDIT>UNDO" and then repeat the action. This is very frustrating and time-consuming. Any ideas? All software is up to date.

Hi @carrie_6571,

Thanks for sharing the details and sorry to hear that you experience this. Could you please check this related thread and let me know if what you're seeing is similar to the behavior described there:
https://adobe.ly/4b3DLoa

If it does match, I'd like to share that this is a known issue and a bug was logged for it. The good news is that it has already been worked on and fixed. Please refer to the pinned comment in that thread for the recommended steps and fix, and let me know if applying that resolves the issue for you and your coworker.

Looking forward to your update.

Abhishek

Hi everyone,

Thanks again for your patience here. I wanted to share a quick update from the product team.

The fix for this issue is included in InDesign 21.2, and the latest pre-release build available now is 21.2.0.27, which is newer than the 21.2.0.25 build mentioned earlier. If you are still seeing the text disappearing behavior, please update to 21.2.0.27 from the Creative Cloud Desktop App under Apps > Pre-release > InDesign and test the same workflow there.

Once you've tried the update, please let us know if the issue is resolved on your side. Your confirmation will help us close the loop and move this fix forward to the public release.

Looking forward to your update.

Abhishek

Are you in the Prerelease program? Several users have specified "Prerelease 21.2.0.27".

If not, the public release should be out soon.

The imminent 21.2 patch promises to cure this problem and the History panel problem.

I tried to download and install a prerelease build from the Creative Cloud desktop app. I went to Apps but could not find  Categories  or Prerelease.

Hello Anubhav,

it seems that the Pre-Release has fixed the issue of the disappearing text.
Is there any planning when this changes will be implemented in the official release?

Thanks,

Klaus
