InDesign 21.0 - Copy/paste to Photoshop fails with 'Failed to Export PDF' when document contains linked files

  • April 16, 2026

**Product:** Adobe InDesign 2026 (Version 21.0)
**OS:** macOS (en_GB locale)
**Related apps affected:** Adobe Photoshop 2026

---

**Bug 1: Copy/paste from InDesign to Photoshop fails when document contains linked files**

When attempting to copy a vector object from an InDesign document that contains linked files, the following errors occur:
- InDesign displays: "Failed to Export the PDF file"
- Photoshop displays: "Could not complete the Paste command because the clipboard data is empty or invalid"

The Links panel reports all links as valid (no warnings or missing link indicators). Despite this, the copy operation fails. Vector objects in documents with NO linked files copy and paste into Photoshop correctly.

This confirms the issue is triggered by the presence of linked files, even when those links are reported as healthy by InDesign.

**Steps to reproduce:**
1. Open an InDesign document containing linked files (all links reporting as OK in the Links panel)
2. Select any vector object
3. Copy (Cmd+C)
4. Switch to Photoshop and attempt to paste (Cmd+V)
5. Error messages appear as described above

**Workaround:** Manually relinking all files before each working session temporarily resolves the issue, but links revert to a broken state the next time the document is opened — despite being stored locally with consistent file names and paths.

---

**Bug 2: Linked files require manual relinking every session**

In the same document, all linked files — stored locally on the Mac with no network, external drives, or cloud sync involved — must be manually relinked at the start of every working session. The Links panel incorrectly reports these links as valid between sessions, masking the underlying problem.

**Expected behaviour:** Links to locally stored files with unchanged names and paths should persist correctly between sessions without requiring manual intervention.

---

**Additional troubleshooting already performed:**
- Clipboard Handling preferences verified ("Prefer PDF when pasting" and "Copy PDF to clipboard" both enabled)
- InDesign preference files deleted and regenerated from scratch
- No third-party plugins installed
- All files stored locally with no network or external storage involved
- Issue is reproducible across multiple documents containing linked files

This appears to be a regression introduced in the 2026 release. Both bugs together significantly disrupt standard print production workflows. Please escalate for investigation.

Hi Leo and Abhishek and all,

A further update to let you know where things stand.

Having exhausted all available workarounds — including resetting preferences, verifying clipboard handling settings, the IDML export route, and manually relinking 132 links at the start of every single working session – I have reached the point where InDesign 2026 is no longer viable for my day-to-day professional workflow.

I have therefore made the decision to uninstall InDesign 2026 and roll back to InDesign 2025. This is not a decision I've taken lightly, as I'd prefer to be on the latest version, but the combination of bugs documented in this thread – particularly the link resolution failure on macOS after every reboot, and the Links panel falsely reporting Status: OK throughout – makes it impossible to work reliably and efficiently.

I wanted to flag this explicitly, as I feel it underlines the severity of the issue. If a professional user is being forced to roll back an entire application version to restore basic functionality, that warrants urgent attention.

I will continue to monitor this thread and am happy to assist with further testing if Adobe is able to identify a potential fix or patch. I would also strongly encourage Adobe to prioritise reproducing this issue on macOS specifically, as it appears the testing carried out so far has been on Windows 11, which may explain why it hasn't been reproduced on your end.

Many thanks for your assistance so far.

    Kind regards,
    Zig

I wonder if your issue sounds similar to the one this user has just reported:

Although that user reports that the problem affects InDesign 2025, too.

(That thread is long and convoluted so it might take some time to parse the details.)

    Sounds like.

By the way, I’ve just reinstalled 2025 InDesign and life, as my desktop know it, is back to normal. Thank goodness. I’ve lost so many hours nurse-maiding 2016 InDes-aster, as I know call it – for this Mac user certainly.

If anyone out there does have the same or a similar problem. By all means keep 2006 (pop it in a seperate folder “Backup 2026 Indesign), and reinstall 2025 InDesign 20.0. At least, until Adobe sort this huge hiccup out. Based on previous known knowledge, who knows when that will be?

Good luck (and hooray for 2025!)

    Hi Leo and Abhishek,

I wanted to follow up with the results of further testing, which I think provides some important additional evidence.

Following advice to try the IDML workaround, I exported the problematic document as IDML, reopened it, and saved it as a new .indd file. To clarify the process: opening the IDML and saving it produced a standard .indd file, confirming this was a completely fresh document and not a resaved version of the original.

Immediately after this process, the file appeared to be working correctly — all links were functioning, High Quality Display rendered properly, and copy/paste to Photoshop worked.

However, after rebooting the Mac and reopening this brand new IDML-generated .indd file, the problem had fully returned:

    - All 132 links are showing Status: OK in the Links panel, yet none are functioning correctly
    - High Quality Display shows the same visual corruption as before (pixelation, black screens with coloured scan lines)
    - Copy/paste to Photoshop, PDF export, and printing all fail

This is significant because it rules out document corruption as the cause. A brand new file generated from IDML exhibits exactly the same behaviour after a reboot. This points firmly to a bug in how InDesign 2026 handles link path resolution on macOS following a system restart, rather than anything specific to the original document.

The Links panel continues to report Status: OK while the links are clearly non-functional, and it also remains a consistent and reproducible part of the issue.

I hope this additional evidence helps to isolate and escalate the problem.

    Many thanks,
    Ziggy

    Hi Abhishek,

Thank you for the prompt response.

Unfortunately, I'm unable to share any of my InDesign files as all my work is client-based and confidential. However, I can confirm that the issue is consistently reproducible, and I will attempt to create a clean test document to demonstrate the problem, along with a screen recording showing the errors.

A few points that may help narrow this down:

    1. You tested on Windows 11, but I'm on an Apple Mac Studio running macOS Tahoe (Version 26.4.1). This may be significant as the bug could be Mac-specific.

    2. I have the latest version of InDesign available for macOS — there are currently no further updates available for Mac via the Creative Cloud app.

    3. This issue did not occur at all in InDesign 2025. It appears to be a regression introduced in the 2026 release.

    4. The behaviour is consistent and repeatable every single session. Each time I reopen the same InDesign file, the following problems occur despite the Links panel showing all links as connected with no warnings:

       - Copying any object to Photoshop fails with "Failed to Export the PDF file" / "clipboard data is empty or invalid"
       - Exporting to PDF fails
       - Printing fails
       - Switching to High Quality Display mode renders all linked images as a fuzzy, corrupted mess — strongly suggesting InDesign is aware the links are not truly functional, despite reporting them as valid

    5. The only workaround is to manually relink every single linked file at the start of each session. Once relinked, all of the above functions work correctly — until the file is closed and reopened at startup the following day, when the problem returns. It’s a joy.

    6. All linked files are stored locally on the Mac. There is no network storage, external drives, or cloud sync involved. File names and paths never change between sessions.

I will follow up with a test file and screen recording as soon as I'm able to put one together.

    Many thanks,
    Ziggy

Your original post says 21.0 but the current version is 21.3. Please clarify exactly what version of InDesign you’re running.

    Hi Bob,

Here is a screenshot from ‘Creative Cloud’ ot which version of Adobe InDesign I’m running on my Mac OS.

Yes, you’re right. I did say 21.0, but it is, in actual fact, 21.3 that is giving me all this ‘linking’ love and joy to my life. Seriously, though, after the Mac reboot and the subsequent link fail, I now have 130+ links to reconnect, again. And this happens after every reboot, every day, with every InDesign file. I love InDesign, but I have to say this is getting me down.

    Many thanks,
    Ziggy

I also can’t reproduce either of the problems. They’re probably connected to the unusual issue you have with the links.

Can you post screenshots of a couple of links in your Links panel that show the Link Info part expanded where the full link path is visible?

This appears to be a regression introduced in the 2026 release.

Does it mean that when you open the same documents in InDesign 2025 you don’t experience these issues?

    Hi Leo,

Thank you for your response. Please find the requested screenshots attached.

To answer your question about InDesign 2025 — I no longer have it installed on my Mac, so unfortunately, I'm unable to test the same documents in that version. However, I can confirm with certainty that this behaviour did not occur before the 2026 update.

The screenshots tell an interesting story:

    1. The Links panel reports Status: OK on all affected links (see screenshots 3 and 4), yet the files are clearly not rendering correctly.

    2. The difference between Typical Display and High Quality Display (screenshots 1 and 2) is dramatic — in High Quality Display, one linked image renders as a completely black screen with coloured scan lines, and another as a heavily pixelated mess. This strongly suggests InDesign cannot actually access the linked files despite reporting them as healthy.

    3. Both affected links are stored locally on the Mac at consistent paths — there is no network storage, external drives, or cloud sync involved, and the file names and paths never change between sessions.

    4. I also noticed a tooltip in the Links panel briefly showing a different path to the one stored in Link Info for the same file, which may be relevant.

As a workaround, I have tried exporting the document as IDML and reopening it as a fresh .indd file. So far this appears to be working, but I have not yet rebooted the Mac to confirm whether the problem returns after a restart — which is typically when the issue reoccurs.

The file types affected are PSD and TIFF, both created in Adobe Photoshop 27.5 on the same Mac.

I hope this additional information helps to isolate the issue. I'm happy to provide further details if needed.

    Many thanks,
    Ziggy

I wonder if, by any chance, the problem is only affecting links whose path has a folder whose name contains square brackets and/or periods?

    Hi @Ziggy_Gsy,

Thanks for reaching out, and sorry for the trouble you're facing. I tried to reproduce this on my end using Adobe InDesign 21.3 on Windows 11 along with Photoshop 2026 (v27.5). In a clean test (new document with a freshly placed linked file), copy/paste worked as expected and pasted correctly as a Smart Object.

To help us narrow this down, could you please share:

    • A sample InDesign file (packaged with links, if possible)

    • A short screen recording showing the issue and the error messages

    • The file type(s) of the linked assets (PSD, JPG, TIFF, etc.)

If the file is confidential, you can share it via DM using any publicly available cloud transfer service.

Also, if possible, please update to the latest version of InDesign and let us know if the issue still reproduces there.

    Looking forward to your update.
    Abhishek
