InDesign 21.1 to PDF - corrupt

I have the latest update 21.1 and ever since I have been having issues converting pages to PDF from a file I am creating using InDesign. When I try to convert certain pages to PDF, it either will create the PDF but it it is corrupt and when I try to create the PDF again, it says there is a background task running and that task is preventing me from doing anything else. Ultimately, I have to End Task and restart the program. It will work for a bit then I will have the same issue again. This is happening daily. I have not been able to pinpoint which background task is causing the problem. Next time it happens, I will take screenshots of the messages.

Yes, once you can show a screenshot with the exact task it will be easier to understand the issue (that's in addition to workaround suggestions you already got).

I have attached a Word doc with screenshots. Thank you.

Hi @46253339 ,

what I should try is to export the PDFs without using a background task.

It's possible in two ways:

[1] You create a new InDesign book file, you add the document you want to export to PDF to the InDesign book file and export with the menu command of the InDesign book. By that method InDesign will not create a background task, but exports the PDF in "foreground". As long as the export is running, you will not be able to do something else with InDesign.

[2] If you have admin rights you could install a text-only text file with a special name in InDesign's application folder of the program folder on your PC when InDesign is not running. That would supress all background task for exports and will export in the "foreground". For details see my post from 2021 here:

Regarding [1]. Why should I need to create a book file? Why does InDesign run a background task in documents and not in books? Sorry, it just seems like extra work. I will try it. Regarding [2], I do not have administrator rights but I will look into that with those who do at my agency. Thank you for your reply. Will keep you posted.
