InDesign 21.2 'Default Relink Folder' Not Working – Most Recent Relink Folder Preference Ignored

I recently updated my InDesign 26 version to interim version 21.2 and this preference doesn’t seem to be working anymore. I have the “Default Relink Folder” in the File Handling preference set to “Most Recent Relink Folder”.

Previously when I had say 10 InDesign documents in a folder, I would open the first and relink to my Links folder that is not in the same folder as the InDesign documents. Then every subsequent InDesign file in that folder that I would open would look to that Links folder I just linked to and update appropriately.

Since this interim update, that preference doesn’t seem to work and I have to browse to the links folder again for each InDesign document.

Hoping I am missing something or that this can get fixed.

Thanks,

Don

    Hi @donr30203975,

Thanks for sharing the detailed explanation of the behavior you’re seeing. I tested this on Windows 11 with InDesign 21.2, and the ‘Most Recent Relink Folder’ preference is working as expected on my end.

Could you please confirm your exact OS details so I can align the test environment accordingly?

In the meantime, I recommend resetting InDesign preferences manually and then testing again. Please follow the steps shown in this Help article and the included video to reset preferences:
    https://helpx.adobe.com/indesign/using/setting-preferences.html

After resetting, relaunch InDesign, set the Default Relink Folder preference again, and test the workflow.

If the issue still persists, please try creating a new local admin user account and test there to check whether this is user profile specific. You can follow these guides:
    Mac: https://support.apple.com/en-in/guide/mac-help/mh15191/mac
    Windows: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/manage-user-accounts-in-windows-104dc19f-6430-4b49-6a2b-e4dbd1dcdf32

Additionally, please test InDesign in Safe Mode to rule out any third-party software or extensions interfering:
    Windows: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/start-your-pc-in-safe-mode-in-windows-92c27cff-db89-8644-1ce4-b3e5e56fe234
    macOS: https://support.apple.com/en-in/guide/mac-help/mh21245/mac

Let me know how it goes after trying these steps so we can take it further.

    Looking forward to your update.

    Abhishek

OS is Sonoma 14.8.4, I did try to uncheck and check the box again and restarting both InDesign and MAC, no luck.

    Thanks,

    Hi @donr30203975 ,

Thanks for the update and for confirming your macOS version. Could you please let me know if you were able to try the other troubleshooting steps I shared earlier, such as resetting InDesign preferences manually, testing in a new local admin account, and checking the behavior in Safe Mode? These steps can help confirm whether this is related to your user profile or any background services.

Also, if possible, I’d recommend checking whether updating macOS to the latest available version makes any difference, as this could help determine if the behavior is OS related.

Please share your observations after trying these, so I can take this further and assist you accordingly.

    Looking forward to your update.

    Abhishek
