InDesign 21.4 no longer recognizes transparency in legacy TIFF files
After updating to InDesign 21.4 (including the latest 21.4.x update), our existing TIFF files with transparency are no longer imported correctly.
These are production files from our publishing workflow that have been used successfully for months.
Expected behavior
When placing a legacy TIFF with transparency into InDesign, the transparent background should be preserved.
Actual behavior
The TIFF is imported with a white background instead of transparency.
Steps to reproduce
-
Open the attached legacy TIFF in Photoshop.
-
Photoshop correctly displays the transparent background.
-
Place the TIFF in InDesign 21.4 using File > Place (with or without "Show Import Options").
-
The transparency is not recognized. The import dialog only offers:
-
Alpha Channel: None
-
-
The image is placed with a white background.
Comparison with previous versions
The exact same TIFF file works correctly in the previous InDesign version.
When using Show Import Options, the previous version offers:
-
Alpha Channel: Transparency
InDesign 21.4 no longer offers this option.
Additional testing
-
PSD files with the same transparent image work correctly in InDesign 21.4.
-
Creating a new TIFF with transparency in the current Photoshop version also works correctly.
-
If the legacy TIFF is opened in Photoshop and immediately saved again as a TIFF (without changing the image), InDesign 21.4 recognizes the transparency correctly.
This indicates that InDesign 21.4 is unable to correctly interpret transparency in certain legacy TIFF files, although previous InDesign versions handled these files correctly.
Impact
Our company maintains a large image database containing many legacy TIFF files with transparency. Since updating to InDesign 21.4, every downloaded TIFF must be opened and re-saved in Photoshop before it can be used. This significantly disrupts our production workflow.
Please investigate whether support for legacy TIFF transparency has changed or regressed in InDesign 21.4.
