Indesign Accessibility

Hi

 

I am trying to work on an indesign file and want to make accessibility remediations - so the exported PDF is as accessible as possible. I looked online and found following techniques. Please share if there are any more accessibility remediation techniques for indesign.

1. Mapping Paragraph styles to PDF tags

2. Setting reading order in Articles panel

3. Setting alt text for informative images

4. Marking decorative images as decorative

5. Marking first row in a table as header row

6. Setting the Table of contents and Bookmarks

7. Setting Document title

8. Using the inbuilt Bulleted and Numbered list to construct the lists

9. Setting alt text for hyperlinks

10. Export Settings

 

My indesign file does not have forms, so not looking for form related techniques.

Please share if i am missing any more available accessibility remediation techniques in indesign.

Your starting list is pretty good but as Frans pointed out is missing a few items. Tables are an important factor as well as Tag order and Reading Order which are two separate items. From a resources perspective, I can recommend the following:

Your starting list is pretty good but as Frans pointed out is missing a few items. Tables are an important factor as well as Tag order and Reading Order which are two separate items. Well, that list is the very beginning and missing some things (like language settings, Header structure, preparing for Role mapping in Acrobat, Tagging order versus Reading order, complex table relations setting like row headers etc).
After that there is waaaay more to do and to remediate in Acrobat. Learning to make a good Accessible PDF involves a lot more. My advice would be to follow (online) training, like LinkeIn learning courses from Chad Chelius for example (or, if you are Dutch, my online training).

Hi

 

Thanks for your reply. I am aware of remediation in PDF once file is converted. I am trying to see if there is anything else i can do in Indesign itself before converting to PDF to make the process quicker.

 

Could you kindly point me to such resources.

I did look at this Youtube video from Chad Chelius : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j5CND3bbuSI

and it covered the same tchniques i listed above.

 

I have come across mapping paragraph styles to H tags (P tag, Automatic) in PDF. Could you confirm if that is what you mean by Header Structure/preparing for role mapping in Acrobat? Or is it different?
